Co-designed with young people and Foundation for Young Australians’ YLAB, these resources support young people to know their rights in detention.
The Know Your Rights poster and booklet are designed to help young people in custody or detention understand their legal, cultural, and personal rights.
These resources explain, in clear language, what young people are entitled to — like free legal help, respect, education, and staying connected with family and culture. They also highlight what should never happen to young people in detention, such as unfair punishment or discrimination.
Having access to this information is important so that young people have factual, reliable information on how they can speak up, seek help, and make informed decisions - to ultimately stay as safe and well as possible while in detention.
