Martu Hostel
A culturally grounded boarding program in Newman supporting Martu young people from remote communities to stay connected to culture while accessing education, building confidence, and preparing for future pathways.

Overview
Living far from secondary schools can make it harder for young people to continue their education. Martu Hostel provides a safe and supportive place to live in Newman, so students can attend school while staying connected to their families, culture and community, and building skills for their future.
Who is this program for
Young Martu people pursuing secondary and vocational education.
About the program
For many young people living in remote communities, going to secondary school means living away from home – and away from Culture and community.
Martuku Jijiku Maya (the Martu Hostel) provides a welcoming place where Martu students can stay while continuing their education in Newman. The program is designed to support the whole young person – balancing learning, wellbeing and cultural connection. Alongside day-to-day care, students are supported to build confidence, independence and life skills. Strong partnerships with community help ensure young people can stay connected to family and culture while navigating new opportunities. This creates a stable, supportive environment where young people can focus on their education and future pathways.
The project has been delivered through a partnership between 54 reasons, the Pilbara Development Commission, Jamukurnu Yapalikurnu Aboriginal Corporation (JYAC) (formerly Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation, and the Martu Schools Alliance with the support of BHP.
